The Complicated Hypertension Clinic is presently located at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Level 1, in the Dialysis Teaching and Transplant Clinic offices.
If you have been referred to the Complicated Hypertension Clinic, you can expect the following:
- Initial visit will take approximately 1 ½ hrs
- Follow Up visits will take approximately ½ hr
- Follow Up visits will be scheduled dependant on individual situations, and will be discussed with you at the end of each visit.
- Asked to bring your medications and home blood pressure monitoring readings to each visit
- Complete bloodwork, urine samples or other tests (such as ECG) as discussed with your health care team at various times
- Encouraged to monitor your blood pressure at home
By treating Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), you can help reduce your risk of stoke, heart attack, heart failure and/or kidney failure.
To keep your blood pressure under control:
- Know what your blood pressure should be and work to keep it at that level.
- Measure your blood pressure at home, if recommended.
- Take your medications the way your doctor/nurse has explained to you.
- Eat healthy foods .Try the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.
- Limit the amount of sodium in your diet.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Lose weight if you are overweight.
- Increase physical activity.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Be smoke free.
- Manage your stress.
- Be involved in your health.
